It's important to stand far away from your charmed pet during regular group charming. This way you have time to cast and channel a PBAE Stun before your charmed pet gets to you and starts beating you up. If your charmed pet is ensnared, you can usually skip straight to recharming without any delay.

Enchanters are the most subtle of spell casters, with little focus on doing damage directly but tremendous impact on the world around them. Enchanters are primarily a magic-using class, with the ability to wear cloth armor and wield blunt weapons and daggers.

Introduction[edit]

Enchanters specialize on improving the minds of their allies, with unmatched mana regeneration spells and mental enhancements. Haste spells are also the domain of the enchanter, providing an incredible boost in attack speed for members of their group. Enchanters have many powers of illusion as well, allowing them to take the form of many different creatures and races.

In battle, enchanters are able to bring order to chaotic situations, often saving their group in a fight that would otherwise be lost. Enchanters possess the ability to mesmerize their enemies, temporarily removing them from a battle. Attack slowing spells are also a specialty, dramatically lowering the speed of a monster's attacks for a period of time. In many situations, enchanters can call upon powerful charm spells to subjugate the mind of a monster and command it to do the enchanter's bidding.

  • Strength - Mainly effects carry capacity for coin and loot for Enchanters.
  • Stamina - Adds to Maximum Hit Points.
  • Dexterity - Quickens the speed of learning weapon skills and the rate at which magic weapon effects proc while in melee.
  • Agility - Effects your chance to avoid being hit and to avoid taking high hits while enemies are meleeing you. Anything below 75 will significantly impact your ability to raise your defense skill.
  • Wisdom - Not a factor for Enchanters
  • Intelligence - Raises maximum mana gained per level and the rate at which you learn spell skills. Quickens the rate at which you learn general and craft skills if higher than Wisdom.
  • Charisma - Charisma is NOT as big an impact on TAKP as it is on P99!!! Influences the effectiveness of 4 spell lines for enchanters: Charm, Lull, Memory Blur, and Mesmerize (see resists section below). Less than 100 Charisma will hurt vendor buy/sell prices.

Religion[edit]

Enchanters should, unless they are role-playing, always choose to be agnostic. In some areas your illusion and faction spells will not be enough to keep you from being Kill on Sight, usually due to Religion. If you choose to be agnostic you virtually eliminate the risk of being murdered on a religious background. It may however exclude you from partaking in certain quests at stages during the game (Wreath of Nature) or from using some items if you have no religion. Religion is one element of faction you can never change, so choose wisely.

Spell Information[edit]

Charm, Root and Lull Resist Mechanics[edit]

Charm works like this: (although minor unknown unknowns may exist)

On spell lands, the target's resist is modified by (CHA - 75) / 8, max 25. So if the enchanter has 275+ CHA then they'll get a -25 MR bonus to casts, making it considerably easier to land. If CHA is under 75, there is no penalty to having lower CHA.

Charm tick saves are handled this way:

  • Tick saves in EQ do more than one roll. The first roll is a chance to roll against the MR. This roll is 50% for charm. If this roll fails, charm will hold without checking MR.
  • The caster gets a +4 level bonus when rolling against MR. This makes charm hold better on targets near the caster's level.
  • Resist adjust modifiers on the spell DO apply to tick save throws. (Boltran's has a -10 resist mod)
  • The target's effective MR resist is floored at 5 points, and that is what causes a break chance on an otherwise 0 MR target.
  • Live's resist roll is 1-200. Al'Kabor's was either 0-200 or 0-199. Both use a >, not a >=. This means the charm break resist check is 2.5% for Live and 3% for AK. (since there is a 50% prior roll, break chance per tick is half these %s before TD)
  • Charisma DOES NOT affect the target's chance of breaking charm at all.
  • Total Domination is merely a 15%/25%/35% chance (for ranks 1-3) to keep holding if the caster would otherwise lose the tick save throw.

Root tick saves work like this:

  • Like charm, root has a preliminary roll. This roll is 75%. If this roll fails, root will hold without checking MR. I.e. a 1 in 4 chance to NOT check MR.
  • The caster gets a +4 level bonus when rolling against MR like charm does.
  • Resist adjust modifiers on the spell DO apply to tick save throws.
  • The MR resist is floored at 5 points, and that is what causes a break chance on an otherwise 0 MR target.
  • Live's resist roll is 1-200. Al'Kabor's was either 0-200 or 0-199. Both use a >, not a >=.

Lull fails work like this:

  • When a lull spell lands on a NPC, the NPC's MR is ignored and instead 15 MR is used.
  • The 15 MR is still modified by level difference, meaning mobs 6 levels or more below the caster will never aggro.
  • If the spell resists, then a second roll is done using the caster's charisma. This roll is: 90 - CHA / 4. Failing this roll results in a critical fail and the NPC aggroing on the caster; otherwise the NPC will ignore the resist.
  • If there is a cap to the charisma critical failure chance, then it's not seemingly hit at 305 CHA. I did not parse beyond 305.
  • Lulls have a chance to fade early. The precise logic is unknown, however parses resulted in this:
    • 7% per tick on a +5 a red con
    • 2% per tick on white cons
    • 1% per tick on a -1 blue.
    • 0% per tick on a -5 blue

Charm Information[edit]

Basic Tactics[edit]

  • Single Kill: Charm a pet, buff/give pet toys, and use to kill mobs. Periodically break charm, mez and memblur to quickly heal pet. Re-tash, snare and charm. You can pet tank or pet DPS with a player tank or while kiting.
  • Double Kill: Charm a pet and attack a similar mob. Intent is to kill both for XP at the end of the fight, letting them both beat each other down relatively equally. Break charm before pet dies, using DD or DOTs to finish them off for full XP from both. Plane of Storm frogs is an ideal location...so easy even Druids can do it.
  • Reverse Charm: Charm a more difficult mob and have it attack a number of other mobs. Root them all, and let them beat down your pet. Break charm and nuke for full XP. Charm the next strongest in the bunch and repeat, continuing to refresh root the entire time.

Recharming[edit]

On a charm break:

  1. Stop the mob from hitting you using stun/mez/root/snares (Runes help here...)
  2. Refresh debuffs (tash, malo, snare)
  3. Recharm
  4. Rebuff

It's important to stand far away from your charmed pet during regular group charming. This way you have time to cast and channel a PBAE Stun before your charmed pet gets to you and starts beating you up. If your charmed pet is ensnared, you can usually skip straight to recharming without any delay.

If the geometry allows keep your Enchanter's back to a wall or solid structure so that pushback is less extreme. The amount your character moves is related to your FPS and typically your FPS is lower when you are boxing and even lower on toons in the background window. So if you're casting and tabbing to another box you will be subject to more extreme push allowing more chance for an interrupt.

Example: When charm breaks cast Color Slant. Immediately use a Global Cool Down (GCD) reset clickie like JBoots or Rod of Insidious Glamour once (used to be twice before 2023). Instant clickies forces your spell gems to refresh instantly rather than waiting 2 seconds, saving you precious seconds to recharm. Then immediately cast Boltran's to recharm. This should land the charm before Stun ends.

The alternative is cast level 4 Mesmerize instead of Boltrans here. Then you recast tash and recharm. This allows you a 24 second grace period to debuff and recharm rather than the 8 seconds Color Slant provides you.

On higher level targets, your stuns will not work so switch to PBAE Mez (Entrancing Lights/Word of Morell) instead. AE Mez will mez for one tick, GCD hotkey once to refresh spell gems, then recharm or cast a longer mez so you can re-tash and recharm at your leisure.

Once you get Affliction Haste 3 (Falinkan Circlet), you can actually Stun->Tash->GCD->Charm before the Stun ends.

Before you get a hang of it, I suggest not using dual wield on pet and not hasting the pet. It makes the breaks far more forgivable.

XP Penalties[edit]

If one or more pets (including charm pets) deals all of the damage to a mob, then only 31% of the normal XP will be awarded. In these situations, have someone in the group do at least one point of damage to all of the mobs. Low level nukes or a Blue Ceramic Band are handy for this purpose. Take note, lesser focus effects can significantly improve some useful low level Enchanter root/stun/mez spells, still used through your 50s. Gaining one as soon as possible will help you survive charm breaks, until you get stronger Runes/better gear/AAs. Getting off a 1.3 second Root never gets old...

  • Affliction Haste I (33%) and Spell Haste I (15%) work on up to level 20 spells with a minimum 1 second casting time (Color Flux 1 sec, Color Shift 1.5 sec)
  • Affliction Haste II (33%) and Spell Haste II (15%) work on up to level 44 spells with a minimum 2 second casting time (Root 2 sec, Color Skew 2 sec, Enthrall & Entrance 2.5 sec)
  • All other spell focus hastes have a minimum 3 second casting time

Spell Specialization[edit]

Enchanters really only have two choices to go for in Specialization: Alteration or Conjuration.

Alteration is by far the more popular choice as 80% of enchanter spells are of this nature. It includes roots, hastes, slows, DoTs, charms, and most buffs and debuffs. Most enchanters choose this as their field of Specialization.

Conjuration is used for the mesmerization series of spells. This is the major use of crowd control in the game. Some Enchanters once they reach Level 50, complete the quest at the Temple of Sol Ro and switch to this Specialization as they find they are casting more mes-based spells than any other type. It is really a question of gameplay.

Generally speaking, unless you are very sure, if you are making an Enchanter I recommend you specialize in Alteration.

  • Blue Ceramic Band Clickable at level 20, useful for doing a point of damage when charm killing.
  • Horses: On EQMac there was a bug that let you use old models get the horse buff icon, which lets you meditate without riding a horse. The benefit of this is you can move at normal sow speeds while buying the cheapest horse, don't suffer from acceleration/deceleration effect of horses, can duck spells to interrupt casting, avoid sit agro, and not have to use Luclin models if you don't like the graphic. First 100 Alternate Advancement Points[edit]

In a TAKP Forums post, Rimidal recommended the following first 100 Alternate Advancement for new Enchanters. Your play style will dictate the priority, but here is an attempt...

  • Archetype – Spell Casting Mastery 3 (12 AAs) – Use less mana for all your spells.
  • PoP Ability – Total Domination 3 (12 AAs) – Makes your charms last longer by reducing chance to break, which is as useful as it sounds.
  • PoP Ability – Eldritch Rune 3 (9 AAs) – Instant casting self-rune that absorbs up to 1500 dmg and has quick cooldown. Very useful to help survivability. Note it does not stack with Arcane Rune.
  • Class – Mass Group Buff (9 AAs) – Everyone loves MGB buffs and you have a lot of very useful buffs. Can skip if you don’t attend raids or just hate buffing.
  • Archetype – Combat Agility 3 (12 AAs) – Help avoid incoming damage. Enchanters tank a lot so you need to maximise surviability because a dead Enchanter can be very bad times.
  • PoP Advance – Lightning Reflexes 5 (15 AAs) – Further boost to melee avoidance and survivability.
  • Archetype – Mental Clarity 3 (12 AAs) – Pre-requisite for Gather Mana AA.
  • Class – Gather Mana (5 AAs) – Very useful for recovering from death, or can save the day in clutch moments. I like it and use it a lot, but your priority may vary.
  • Archetype – Spell Casting Reinforcement 3 (12 AAs) – Help extend all your buffs, because everyone loves longer buffs.

Additional AAs to aim for: Spell Casting Reinforcement Mastery, Channeling Focus, Natural Durability, Combat Stability, Innate Defense.
