Getting Started all Linux Versions

This guide is for playing on the official TAKP server using a version of Linux as your main OS.

Linux Installation Options[edit]

Just like there are many different Linux distributions (distros) there are now several ways to install and play TAKP on Linux. These different installation procedures each offer their own benefit; for example, the commandline version offers an excellent way to multibox and keep down application bloat; while the PlayOnLinux installation allows for a moderate effort installation and offers easy multiboxing; and, the Lutris aims to be a simple installation procedure, especially once the YAML file is officially added to Lutris' website.

Commandline Installation[edit]

Note: These have older versions of wine listed in their installation procedures. I tested these out with the latest wine-staging (version 9.12 as of 30 September 2024) and they worked. It may take a little extra effort to get your distro working with the latest wine-staging.

PlayOnLinux[edit]

PlayOnLinux provides a more user-friendly way to complete commandline installs, like those listed above. It provides a GUI for the user to navigate and enters the appropriate commands in the background based on graphical interaction. For those of you who aren't familiar with the Linux commandline, but are familiar with power-user-type features in Windows and MacOS, this installation method should feel comfortable.

Lutris[edit]

According to their website:

We provide emulators, compatibility layers and game engine re-implementations needed to run games in the most optimal way, often offering an enhanced experience compared to the original platform.

Lutris install scripts do all the work. The goal is to make it a point-and-click installation process and automate as much as possible. There are, of course, pros and cons to this approach. By using someone else's YAML script, you are trusting that it will do what it says it will do. I recommend that you read the script and try to understand what is happening. Script installation offers less personalization, with one caveat: If you are comfortable, you can modify the script and make any changes that you feel are necessary.

Bottles[edit]

The Bottles project is yet another way to install and run Windows applications in Linux. It offers both benefits and complications to the intrepid Linux gamer. This is the process I used to get it up and running.

Log Monitoring[edit]

Gimagukk's Incantatory Notation Apparatus, or GINA for short, is a Microsoft Windows-based application to help the gamer recognize and appropriately react to cue's based on log triggers.

Getting Help & Support[edit]

Please remember that the people who do this are volunteers. We do not owe anyone anything. However, I try to help when and where I am able. There are several ways to get help with both TAKP installation and Linux, in general.

DIY Troubleshooting[edit]

The general preference in the Linux world is for the individual user to learn how to upgrade, troubleshoot and fix their own system. However, if a person has issues that they simply do not understand and cannot seem to fix, they can go to the forums/reddit to ask for help. It is common etiquette to include the problem, what has been tried and has not worked/partially worked/or made things worse.

Direct Contact[edit]

I'm not sure if krakmojo is still playing; however, both I (tragedie37) and Meriadoc have provided methods through which we are willing to help individuals with our specific installation instructions. While I cannot speak for anyone else, I am usually able and willing to help with any Linux problems that are posted in the TAKP forums, listed above.

For installation-specific issues, please contact the individuals in the manner they specified.
