About Alchemy
<br />
Alchemy is the art of potion making. It can only be practiced by Shaman level 25 and higher. The skill is capped at five points of skill per level and can only be raised to 200 points. Wisdom is the best stat for raising skill level; Intelligence would work as well, though why a Shaman would have more INT than WIS. . .

<strong><a name="about alchemy">About Alchemy</a></strong></span><br />
Alchemy skill level can only reach 200 but trivials on the combines go up to 255. To combat failures on the higher trivial potions, an alchemist can obtain a Philosopher's Stone which grants the holder an additional 10% to their Alchemy skill level. Additionally, to combat failures at all trivial levels an Alchemist of level 59 and higher can obtain AAs in Alchemy Mastery for a maximum of 50% reduction in failures.

Potions come in single, five and ten doses. Potions do not stack, though some people may mistakenly refer to a 10 dose potion as a "stack." Potions are commonly abbreviated to pots. Additional potions can be purchased from vendors. Some vendor potions have the same effects as alchemy crafted potions. Information on vendor potions is included in this guide.

A (briefer) history of Alchemy, as gleaned form EQTraders.com: In the beginning all alchemy potions contained one dropped ingredient and one purchased ingredient (called an herb). Some of the herb vendors were located in cities that were training grounds for shaman and others were located in gypsy camps throughout Norrath. Because of the difficulty in obtaining many of the dropped ingredients (one comes from the Plane of Hate) as well as the high cost of the herbs, the fine art of Alchemy was Revamped. The gypsies remained as did the potions that could be made from their herbs, but the herb merchants in metropolitan areas were replaced by new merchants with a different selection of herbs. These herbs could be combined to form less expensive potions, no dropped ingredients were required. The Revamp also introduced fine plate dyes (which do use dropped ingredients). (The Revamp took place as part of a patch on February 17, 2000 making it pre-Kunark.) The expansion to Luclin introduced a new set of herbs and potions. In Shar Vahl merchants once again sold the herbs used in Old Alchemy. The Planes of Power introduced Quintessence of Knowledge.

Alchemy Lore
<br />
I have found two sets of Alchemy Lore. Letters of Jonas Vol. I-V Details Jonas' Old Alchemy discoveries. Not all the potions he lists can be made (this is discussed later [link]). Yvonnes Guide to Alchemy covers Revamp Alchemy. The texts for these two books can be found here. I have not yet found books on Gypsy or Luclin Alchemy.

There is of course eqtraders.com but be aware that it reflects updates we do not have, and that alchemy was completely revamped in those updates.

AllaKabor.com includes alchemy recipes but as of the writing of this guide it is riddled with errors. Items in this guide are linked there and I have been reporting errors as I come across and confirm them.

Many people will recommend Ugzug's Guide. Unfortunantly, this useful PDF is no longer hosted. The guide you are reading right now is largely based on Ugzug's.

rurish's al'kabor alchemy recipies - Totem - scroll down to the second post. This is an application to download. To open the application, drag and drop the data into the app. Totem does not include Old Alchemy or Luclin recipes and as it was based on Ugzug's contains all the errors present in Ugzug's Guide which the guide you are reading has worked to correct. However, it is possible to modify Totem for your own personal use.

How to use potions
<br />
Potions must be placed in a primary inventory slot (not in a bag) when used. As with food, drink and other clickys, potions are used by right clicking on them. Hot buttons can be made of primary inventory slots and a potion you expect to be using regularly could be kept in a primary slot and activated quickly with such a hot button. If you plan on using multiple potions take some time to read their stacking info so you do not waste charges. Some potions stack with similar player cast buffs. Resists are an excellent example of this. However, if you plan on using potions with player cast buffs, carefully consider stackability so you don't waste potions. Similar considerations exist for effects obtained from equipment. The main potions table includes links to the stacking info in this guide as well as the info in lucy.alkabor.com.

Focus items that extend buff duration do NOT work on potions (unless the potion casts a buff your class can cast as a spell).  The Spell Casting Reinforcement AAs DO affect the duration of buffs from potions.

Note: effect name links go to lucy.alkabor.com while ingredient links go to allakabor.com. Potions that come in Lesser to Greater strengths share effect names, this means that the information on Lucy shows a range of stats while the potions themselves may give a specific determined by the strength of the potion. Before I consider this guide complete, all potions will be field tested with characters at levels 1 and 65 to verify status effects and duration.

Cost is based on the best price that charisma and faction can achieve. Where one ingredient is obtained as a drop from a mob, the cost of that ingredient is the best price it can be purchased from an NPC for (data collected from eqtraders.com). The real cost of dropped ingredients can of course vary greatly.  [NEED TO FIND SOMEONE WITH SHAR VAHL FACTION TO RELAY OLD ALCHEMY HERB PRICES]
